Decisions, Decisions

Well, we didn’t quite get to the “well over 100 items” mark that the registry consultant suggested, but we managed to finish registering at both Babies R Us and Target today. Actually, “finished” might not be the best description. I’m sure there are things we forgot that are important. There are other things we intentionally forgot – I think the reason people register for so many items is that they put clothes, receiving blankets, and toiletries on their registries. We kind of figured people will buy those things anyway, so why bother registering for specific ones? (I trust our families and friends to have relatively decent taste. And if they don’t, that’s what gift receipts are for, right?)

Besides, “well over 100” is way too many decisions to make.

We also put together the cradle. Yes, it’s way early, but it was mostly a procrastination technique. This is how the conversation went:

Sarah: “Hey, Denis, do you want to help me clean out the desk that’s in the nursery?”
Denis: “Actually, I was thinking of putting the cradle together today.”
Sarah: “Oh, what a great idea, let’s do that instead!”

Since that took all of 10 minutes, we did manage to clean out the desk drawers, and I started packing away the stuff on the shelves above it. Maybe tomorrow I’ll get the rest put away. That piece of furniture is the biggest obstacle between me and tearing down the horrid wallpaper in the room so we can get ready to paint!

(Sorry for all the baby posts lately. I’ve been knitting fun and exciting things, but I haven’t managed to take pictures yet. Soon, I promise.)

I Survived

Whatever doesn’t kill you makes you stronger, right? So now I’m a really strong human pincushion. Actually, it was really OK (aside from the nasty drink and being somewhat dizzy from hunger) until the last draw, because they had to reuse a vein. Ugh. Of course, in the not-too-distant future I’m going to go through much more unpleasantness than a few little needles to actually have this baby, so I suppose I shouldn’t be complaining!

Thanks for all the good-luck vibes! Now I just have to forget about the test until I get the results – no sense in stressing for the whole weekend, right?

Wish Me Luck, Please…

I “failed” the one-hour glucose test I took last week – not by a lot, but they have a hard cut-off, after which they make you take the three-hour glucose test. This involves drinking twice as much awful fizzy extra-sweet orange soda (I hate orange soda to begin with) and getting blood drawn four times (which I’m really not good at in the first place).

So, tomorrow bright and early (well, maybe 8:00 isn’t really that early) I get to go become a pincushion. I’m going to look like a drug addict by the time I get home. Hopefully, I’ll at least be able to knit for most of the hours I’m sitting there…

Oh, and this topic came up at Sit & Knit tonight: how do women not know they’re pregnant? I’m not talking three or four months here, I’m talking about those stories you hear where someone goes to the emergency room for abdominal pain and comes home with a baby, not knowing they were pregnant in the first place. I mean, you would think the alien kicking inside their belly would be a big clue, wouldn’t you?

Hmmm….

Backstory: this is an animal cracker. It’s supposed to be a camel. I realize that the poor camel had a small accident before being baked. But does anyone else find it absolutely hilarious to see a camel with its legs crossed? (Sorry, it’s probably just me. My sense of humor gets a little strange(r) when I’m tired…)

Oh, and on an even sillier note, when I give my dogs animal crackers (they love them, even though I keep telling them it’s cannibalism) Molly gets a camel because she can go days without peeing, and Murphy gets a sheep since he’s always after my wool.

Yeah, maybe I should stop this entry right now and go to bed before everyone realizes just how bizarre my sense of humor really is…

Gone Quiltin’

Monday, my mom and I played hooky from work to take a quilting class. I haven’t quite managed to finish my table runner yet (really, I’m not planning to leave it pinned to a bright pink beach towel forever!) but here’s what I got done in the four-hour class…well, part of it, anyway – just try taking a picture of a 44″x16″ (it still needs borders to get to it’s finished size) table runner, with questionable lighting and a normal camera lens.

It’s not really quilted anywhere, actually. This main part is woven, and the borders are small enough that they will not need any quilting. It’s supposed to be reversible, but since it’s been pinned to that towel all it’s short little life I have no idea what I’ll find when I baste it and turn it over!

I have to admit, I was a little annoyed to find out, after crawling under my craft table (no small feat at 7 months pregnant) to extract the pedal and power cord so I could bring my (heavier than I remembered) sewing machine that we were told we’d need, that we weren’t actually going to get to the part where we needed the sewing machines during class. (I’m not sure why I trusted them that we’d actually get through the weaving, pinning, basting and sewing in four hours, though.)

But what a fantastic way to spend a Monday! (Mom, can we do this every week?)

Are You Ready?!?

I know it’s just the Hall of Fame game, but there’s football on! Right now! The chili’s on the stove, and I’ve already taken a nap, so I ought to be able to stay up for a good part of the game.

Football!

Too Tired

I’ve just been totally wiped out this week. Turns out that there is actually an underlying cause – I had some routine bloodwork done on Thursday, and I’m apparently anemic. I guess this isn’t an uncommon pregnancy issue, which is why they test for it around now. It does explain a lot…

But the extra iron supplements my doctor suggested really haven’t helped much. (Granted, I’ve only taken them for a couple of days so far, maybe it’s cumulative?) I took a two-hour “nap” this afternoon (can you call it a nap when it’s that long?) and I still feel like I could go back to sleep for another two – or more – hours.

This is not helping me get anything at all done. Even ignoring the dog fur tumbleweeds and layers of dust, I have no energy to cook, or knit, or blog. Just the thought of trying to get the nursery in order is too much energy. I hope this gets better soon, or baby is going to come home to a room with ugly striped wallpaper, a weight bench, and random furniture and other stuff that’s accumulated in there over the last five years.

Random Linkies

I’m surprised I didn’t turn out to be the geek sheep

You are a – Neutral Sheep!
Congrats – you do what you like! You make your own rules, not follow the flock!

Which flock do you follow?

Other neat things to look at today:

  • Haven’t you always wanted a customized bobble-head doll? They’re surprisingly inexpensive, considering they make each one individually.
  • And while you’re ordering take-out tonight, go ahead and order a take-out t-shirt too. I particularly like the onesie that says “A nap is in my near future”!

Knitting Frustrations

Is everything I plan to knit for my baby doomed to failure before I even start it? I tried swatching for a little orange cabled baby sweater. I’m using the suggested yarn, despite the fact that it’s hand wash/dry flat (yes, I’m nuts). It’s supposed to need size 11 needles. On size 7s, I get just under stitch gauge, and way under row gauge. On size 8s, I get just over stitch gauge, and still way under row gauge. OK, admittedly, I’m a loose knitter (in the best possible sense, of course) but what’s wrong with this picture?

Moving on, I figure, who wants to knit with thick wool right now anyway? So I decided to move on to Anouk. This time, I’m not planning to use the recommended yarn, because I really don’t need a lot of hand wash/dry flat baby clothes. I decide, based on washing instructions and lack of time to go to a “real” yarn store, that I’ll try using Lion Brand Cotton-Ease…which, apparently, the local Michael’s are not carrying anymore. At least, the two I went to didn’t have it, and only had a couple of bins marked “LB Cotton-Ease: clearance – $2.00” where it should have been. The ever-so-helpful employees had no idea what it was in the first place, let alone whether they were discontinuing it, or just clearing out old stock.

So, tomorrow, I’m going to go to my nice friendly LYS, where they know everything about every yarn in the place, and most yarns that they don’t carry, and look for Anouk yarn. Or maybe just buy more patterns and yarn for those instead…

Minty Goodness

OK, I think I had my first official pregnancy craving today. I mean, I’ve felt like I wanted certain foods more than others, but I’ve never had a random thing pop into my head and take over my thoughts until I got my hands on it. So, what was this mysterious craving? Pillow mints – a.k.a. after-dinner mints.

Yes, I had to go to Wegmans and buy a bag of candy earlier this evening. The lady at the checkout must have thought I was crazy. Heck, I even think I might have been a little crazy – I can’t even remember the last time I ate these things, but all of a sudden I absolutely needed to have them. I think I might have snapped at Denis because he was taking too long to get ready to go out, and I really, truly needed these mints right then.

Please tell me this was just a passing moment of insanity, and I really won’t be asking him to go buy pickles and ice cream at 2 in the morning any time soon…? (Actually, we do have both in the house at the moment, and the thought of eating them at the same time is quite disgusting. Separately is a whole other matter, though…)
