One Month Old!

Dear Anna,

You are a month old today. I thought time flew by with your big sister, but this time it’s going even faster, if that’s possible. And at the same time, I’m having a hard time remembering what life was like before you joined us. We’ve all been spending the past month figuring out how to be a family of four, but somewhere along the line it just happened, and now it’s our new “normal”. (I can’t really have you thinking that you joined a truly normal family. You didn’t. We do our best, though.)

It’s been a busy month – you’ve been out and about much more than Carolyn was at this point, because I’d go stark raving mad if I had to stay home and watch one more kids’ show. (Honestly, I think your sister might have gone stark raving mad too!) So at eight days old we took you to church, the next day we hosted playgroup, a day later we all went to the mall, and the very next day I faced my fear of taking two kids out by myself and the three of us went to the library and the farmer’s market. We haven’t looked back since.

Once again, I’ve given in to the need for every last minute of sleep I can get at night, so you are spending the vast majority of the night tucked in between me and your daddy. Your sister survived it, and as long as she doesn’t squish you when she crawls in along with us on occasion you will too – don’t worry, I’ll make sure you don’t get squished, though a bigger bed might be a good investment… Since you sleep about three hours in our bed in between wakings vs. only an hour and a half in the bassinet, this is a no-brainer. You occasionally even sleep for almost four hours. This makes for a happy (although still a bit sleep-deprived) mommy. So, thanks.

I don’t know if you’re just way too mellow for your own good, or I’m way more relaxed about things this time, but you really are the easiest baby ever. (And that’s saying something, because Carolyn was also a really easy baby too.) You sleep, you nurse, you fill up diapers, you get visibly bigger every day, and occasionally you do really cute things like chuckle in your sleep or wave your fists around and accidentally punch your sister in the nose. I won’t say that you never cry, but you honestly don’t cry more than five minutes out of an entire day. You have this funny habit of keeping your big toes pointing straight up – unless you’re asleep, and then they’re just as relaxed as the rest of your toes. I don’t know what it means, but I’m taking it as a sign of your superior intelligence.

Just for the record, your hair is not highlighted (despite the blond natural highlights) or hennaed (despite the occasional glimpse of a reddish tint). I’ve been accused of doing one or the other or both, and I don’t want you thinking when you see the pictures when you’re older that I’d do any such thing. :) Oh, and your eyes are pretty much purely gray. I’m going to guess they’ll turn brown like Carolyn’s, but we’ll just have to wait and see.

In the past few days, you’ve really started waking up and noticing the world around you. And that comes along with cute little baby cooing and gooing, and the most beautiful smiles ever. And when you’re sleeping, I get to snuggle your warm little body and drink in your perfect little dimpled hands and the delicate artist-brush eyelashes. If I could just make one wish, it would be to freeze these moments in my memory to savor for all time.

First Smile :)

OK, I have independent confirmation that Anna really did smile at me today. I think she’s smiled at me once or twice before, but it was a fleeting thing and I was too sleep deprived to be sure. This time, I said “hello, baby girl!” as I was holding her in my lap, and her whole face lit up in a smile while she was looking directly at me.

(And no, Denis, it wasn’t just gas!)

Welcome, Anna!

It’s becoming tradition to have a 0th birthday party for our children so we got a little ice cream cake and had a nice dinner with our parents. And took lots of pictures, of course! Honestly, at this point I’ve taken more pictures in Anna’s first four weeks than I did in Carolyn’s first four weeks…I think I might be just a bit too worried about the notion that second children have fewer pictures taken of them.

(All bets are off about the baby books though – to be fair, I didn’t fill in Carolyn’s either…)

(TGI)Fridays & Rainbows

Nana and Poppy arrived today, and we took the girls out to dinner at Friday’s. Anna slept the whole time (yay for eating an entire hot meal!) and Carrie thoroughly enjoyed her chocolate caramel ice cream sundae.

And when we left, we saw this amazing double rainbow – the pictures don’t do it justice at all! Oh, and from where we were standing, the pot of gold was definitely on our front step at home…someone must have moved it before we got there. ;)

First Bath

I have no idea how long it will last, but Anna is definitely a very mellow child. She sleeps through everything – dogs barking, Carrie squealing…and, now, her first bath!

She did wake up once I toweled her off and made her hair all crazy!

First Sit & Knit and Finished Sweater

I didn’t think to get out the camera so there’s no photographic evidence, but Anna came to her first Sit & Knit tonight at the shop. I dressed her up in the cutest little green dress with a fuzzy sheep on the front. She pretty much slept the whole time, and I actually had (just) enough hands-free time to weave in the ends and sew the buttons on her sweater:

Here’s the project page on Ravelry, but here are the vital stats for those not on Rav (yet).
Pattern: February Baby Sweater (Elizabeth Zimmerman’s Knitter’s Almanac)
Yarn: No Two Snowflakes Bellini
Needles: US 3/3.25 mm
Size: There’s no sizing information in the pattern, because, as EZ states, “babies come in all sizes”. I’m thinking it’s around a 6-9 month size, which should work with sleeves rolled up starting when it gets cool next month all the way through spring.

I plan to make a matching hat and socks, and I should have plenty of yarn left for a pair of socks for Carolyn too! (I just have to actually find the time to knit them all…

2 week well-baby visit

Vital stats:
17 days old
7 lbs, 11.5 oz

Well, I apparently make heavy cream instead of milk. Carolyn did this too, though, and weighed almost exactly the same at her two week visit, so I guess I just tend to grow small babies and then fatten ’em up quick after they’re born. :)

But really, I can’t complain about the cute little dimpled elbows or the chunky little thighs!

3.9 Years Old!

Dear Carolyn,

Today you are 3 and 3/4 years old! To say that a lot has changed in your life this month would be a little bit of an understatement. You’ve gone from being an only child to being a great big sister – and while we haven’t gotten all the details sorted out about that, you’re adapting better than anyone could have predicted. But you haven’t only become a big sister this month, let’s see what else has happened…

20080627_coloring.jpg

You amazed me the other day when I pulled out a deck of sight word flash cards for ages 6 and up, and you read all but maybe 15 of the 150+ words. You didn’t sound them out, you just read them. I don’t know why I found it so incredible, since you were practically reading all of “One Fish, Two Fish” a couple of weeks ago, but I guess I’d talked myself into believing you’d memorized the book after we read it to you a couple of times. Not so. You are officially reading, and acting like it’s the most normal thing in the world for you to be doing.

Lately everything has been about you turning four. I think it’s because you’ve been to a couple of birthday parties over the past few weeks, but you’re obsessed with turning four. When we ask you if you want to try a new food, you say “no thank you, but when I’m four I will like it!” You somehow got it into your head that you have to be four before you start preschool in the fall – although you don’t, and won’t, but we’ll have to deal with that closer to when school starts. Oh, and at the moment, you want an alligator cake for your birthday. I’m kind of hoping you change your mind, since I’m not quite sure how to make an alligator cake, but if you insist we’ll figure it out!

20080723_proud_big_sister.jpg

So about this big sister gig. I have to admit, when we first got home with Anna, your exuberance and energy was overwhelming to me. It took a few days for me to realize that you were just trying very hard to make sure you still had an important place in our family. It’s going to take us all a little while to figure out how to be a family of four instead of a family of three, but you will always be as special and important as you were before Anna joined us. I promise.

Feeling Adventurous

I took both girls to the farmer’s market and the library this afternoon. It wasn’t as hard as I thought it would be, but I am pretty tired. I decided to wear Anna instead of snap her seat into a stroller, and for a baby who weighs little more than a bag of flour she sure gets heavy after a while! Also, I think I might have sold at least two Hotslings based on the number of comments I got from people who loved my pouch and wanted to know where I got it.

Technically I’m not supposed to drive until Saturday, but this was literally five minutes down the hill from our house, and if I had to spend one more minute in the house I was going to go insane!
