No Progress

Let’s see. No yarn samples yet (maybe today?), no completed sock, no progress of any sort. Too many rehearsals, not enough sleep. And it’s only going to get much, much worse. But I got my nun costume last night. It’s quite authentic looking. Some of the other cast members were getting a little nervous about all of the nuns walking around last night – seems they were afraid rulers might come out from nowhere and whack the backs of their hands. Hmm…I wonder if I can find one of those old wooden rulers with a metal edge before next rehearsal… :) My only problem is that it’s going to be hot, hot, hot in that costume under stage lights. Tonight there’s no rehearsal, so my plan is to do laundry, cook an actual meal, finish the first sock and maybe cast on the second, and knit up a swatch of the yarn samples that will hopefully arrive today in the mail. And go to bed early!

New Addiction

OK, this is the reason why I didn’t add “start fewer projects” to my new years’ resolutions…I found sock yarn. Yes, I know, socks have been a very popular thing for knitters over the past year, which is perhaps why I didn’t bother. But then I found a yarn that I couldn’t resist. It’s hunter, navy and white, with a splash of lime green, and it creates patterns while you knit with it. (That link will take you to a sample sock, which it similar to, but not exactly like, the sock I’m knitting.) What will they think of next? Now, having never knit a sock before, I probably should have just found a pattern and stuck to it, but I couldn’t find one I thought I’d want to wear when it was done, so I’m kind of making it up as I go along. All the hard part is done: I’ve knit the cuff and leg, turned the heel, and I’m about half-way down the foot. Of the first sock. :) I’d post pictures, but I haven’t been home enough to take any. Trust me, it’s cute.

Puppy-itis

I want another puppy. I even picked one out, a shelter puppy I saw on the web. Unfortunately (well, fortunately for him) he’s already been adopted. :( I suppose it’s silly, admist all the hectic chaos my life has become, to bring another puppy into the house. But I still want one!

OK, the non-decaf gingerbread latte I picked up before rehearsal was a BIG mistake. It’s midnight, and I’m not tired. In fact, I’m typing so fast that I could probably write an entire novel before I had to leave for work in the morning…if I could think of any sort of plot line. I guess I should try to go to sleep, especially since I’m rambling…

Oh, one more thing. I’m lusting after this absolutely gorgeous silk yarn that I found online, thanks to an article in Knitter’s Review. Well, the article was actually about a fuzzy, chunky yarn, but Luna is the one I want. I want to make a shell in every color (except maybe goldenrod). I’m going to just pick one color – either Patina, Iris, or Coral. Now I just have to order some samples, and hope I win the lottery so I can afford it!

Um. Yeah. Sorry. I think maybe it’s time to put the computer down and back away slowly. Really. I’m going to do that right now. ‘Night!

I Saw the Signs…

That is, I watched the movie Signs last night. My parents and youngest brother were going on and on about how scary it was, and how I’d never be able to sit through the whole thing, I’d be so scared. It wasn’t that bad! I guess I’ve somehow earned a reputation as a suspense movie wimp. I thought the movie was actually very good, and I was pretty close on my guess about how it would end, so I was never really in the “at-the-edge-of-your-seat-biting-off-fingernails” mode. Of course, I was supposed to spend my evening off from rehearsals taking down Christmas decorations…I guess this weekend is soon enough, although the tree is looking mighty sad at this point.

Busy. Busy, Busy, Busy…

Rehearsals for Sound of Music 2003 are going well. The problem is, that by the time I get home, I have just enough time to get ready to leave. Dinner has been an interesting challenge – especially with my resolution to eat better. For example, I stopped at Wendy’s last night to get my favorite “healthy fast food”, a mandarin chicken salad. I had to repeat myself at the drive through about 5 times before the guy understood what I was saying, but then he said, “Ok, a mandarin chicken salad, a water and a decaf coffee. That will be …” (whatever, I don’t remember). I drove around to get my order, the guy handed me a bag and said, “here’s your mandarin chicken salad.” Didn’t check. Drove another 20 minutes to rehearsal, grabbed the bag, got settled, and found…a chicken BLT salad. Nevermind that I hate tomatoes and honey mustard dressing. Forget the fact that I was looking forward to mandarin oranges and crispy rice noodles. I was devastated. Until I remembered that it was just dinner, and it still fit the criteria of being somewhat healthy, especially since I skipped the dressing all together. (And I will admit that the salad was quite good, it had a minimum of tomotoes that I could pick around, and I’d consider getting it again. At a different Wendy’s.)

Time Warp

Today I finished not one but two cross-stitches. The one on the left was the one I just posted about. I brought it in for framing this afternoon (and purchased supplies for a new project, of course). I decided that before I started a new project I ought to just take a peek at the unfinished projects in my closet…and found the one on the right. I had finished all but about 2 hours worth of ribbon embroidery on it 5 years ago. Yes, you read that right, five entire years. Now that’s some serious procrastination. Why did I put it down with only 2 hours of work left? Who knows – I might have had to finish something as a gift, or maybe it was just because I wasn’t very good at ribbon embroidery at the time, and it seemed very daunting. How do I know it was five years ago? I apparently was very optimistic. The embroidery was at the top, and I always sign my pieces at the bottom. So before I scrolled to the top to finish the wisteria, I signed it. Maiden-name initials and everything. I think I’ll leave it that way, anyway, because I don’t have the heart to re-sign it. Unlike some of my unfinished projects that I don’t much care for anymore, I still love this one. The sentiment reads, “Kind hearts are the garden, kind thoughts are the roots, kind words are the blossoms, kind deeds are the fruits”.

It’s a very strange feeling to finish two big projects in one day. Even if the second one was mostly done. Very strange.

Feeling Better

I’m still kind of congested, but I think the worst of this cold is over. What sucks is that I just spent a week of vacation being sick. But at least I got a lot of crafting done! I finished the paper camera. Actually, I finished it on New Year’s Eve, so it counts as a finished object for last year! I’m almost done with a cross-stitch sampler that I’d started and done maybe 5 rows on back in June. And I started yet another knitting project – this time a sweater for me. Unfortunately, in just a few short days I’ll have to get back to reality. Work and rehearsals…at least there will be plenty of time to knit while I’m not on-stage in rehearsal!

Happy New Year!

What’s in store for 2003?

  • Take better care of myself – eat out less, get more exercise
  • Spend more time with my family and friends
  • Take Molly for more walks
  • Keep a cleaner house
  • Procrastinate less

Now if I could just shake this terrible cold that I’ve had for the past week, I could get started on those resolutions! Right now, I sound like a frog. A coughing frog. What a way to start the new year. :P

Guess What Santa Brought?

My sister-in-law, Jeannie, got me the All-Paper Camera kit for Christmas! It’s a pinhole camera that’s supposed to work…assuming I manage to put it together right. So far, I’ve only gotten to step 8 of the casing. If you want to see pictures, head to my craft pages

Oh, and if you’re ever in Syracuse and in need of a good meal, head to Coleman’s Irish Pub. It’s about as close to authentic Irish food (and atmostphere) as you’re going to get on this continent. It made me want to go back…
