So.\u00a0 “On the Farm”.\u00a0 I really didn’t have great ideas for this theme, but a bit of googling got me some fun things to try.\u00a0 Butter making, for one:<\/p>\n

Really not much to the materials for this project!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

We took turns passing around the container and shaking it:<\/p>\n

Shake, shake, shake!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n
\"\"<\/a>
Keep on shaking!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

For quite some time it just looked like frothy milk:<\/p>\n

This does not seem to be working...<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

About 12 minutes in, though, it started getting thick and creamy:<\/p>\n

Well, it's starting to change, anyway.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

At 15 minutes, it resembled whipped cream:<\/p>\n

If we added some sugar, we could put this on some pie!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

At 18 minutes, it started looking a bit curdled:<\/p>\n

Ooh! Another change...<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

And at 20 minutes, we had buttermilk separating from the butter:<\/p>\n

Hey, that's kind of looking like butter!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

We poured off the buttermilk and mixed a tiny bit of salt into the butter.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>
20-ish minutes of shaking = fresh buttermilk + butter!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

And then.\u00a0 Then we had buttermilk.\u00a0 And butter that needed a home.\u00a0 So we added flour, baking powder, an egg and some salt…and some commercial butter, because we didn’t want to use up all of our freshly shaken butter:<\/p>\n

We rolled the dough out and cut some circles:<\/p>\n

The rolling pin is the very best part.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

More rolling!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

And had a delicious mid-afternoon snack!<\/p>\n

We should have made some jam, too!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

This was lots of fun, and while buying butter is certainly easier, it’s pretty neat to know exactly what’s in your homemade butter – plus everyone got a good arm workout taking turns shaking the container.\u00a0 The one thing I’d recommend, though, is a different container.\u00a0 The package of these Ziplock twist-on lid containers said “leak resistant” but they are most certainly not leak-proof.\u00a0 Once we got to the part where the buttermilk started separating, since it’s a thin liquid, it leaked out the sides.\u00a0 I’m not sure what kind of container would work better.\u00a0 Maybe a canning jar?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
